Australia PM says tougher hate speech laws will be implemented

(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Thursday plans to implement stricter hate speech legislation in response to a mass shooting at Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead.

Following a meeting of the National Security Committee, Albanese outlined a series of legislative changes aimed at addressing the promotion of violence and racial hatred. “Governments aren't perfect, I'm not perfect. I have done my best to respond,” he said in Canberra, adding, “Anyone in this position would regret not doing more, and any inadequacies which are there, but what we need to do is to move forward.”

Key measures include creating new federal offences for “aggravated hate speech” targeting preachers and leaders who incite violence, along with increased penalties for hate speech promoting violence. Other provisions focus on making hate an aggravating factor in sentencing for online threats and harassment, establishing a system to identify organizations whose leaders engage in violent or racially motivated hate speech, and penalizing serious racial vilification or advocacy of racial supremacy.

Additionally, the home affairs minister will gain new powers to cancel or refuse visas, while a 12-month task force will enhance oversight of the education system to address hate speech.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a father and son opened fire along Bondi Beach in Sydney. One of the shooters was killed at the scene, while the other remains critically injured and is receiving hospital treatment.
