Australia Moves to Tighten Hate Speech Laws

(MENAFN) Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared on Thursday that stricter hate speech legislation will be rolled out following a deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach that claimed the lives of 15 people.

The prime minister outlined a series of proposed legal reforms after convening a session of the National Security Committee, as reported by a broadcaster.

Speaking to journalists in Canberra, Albanese acknowledged personal and governmental shortcomings, stating, "Governments aren't perfect, I'm not perfect," as he addressed the media.

He went on to add, "I have done my best to respond,” emphasizing his efforts in the aftermath of the incident.

Reflecting further, Albanese remarked, “Anyone in this position would regret not doing more, and any inadequacies which are there," before concluding, "but what we need to do is to move forward."

Among the planned measures are the introduction of new federal crimes targeting "aggravated hate speech offense for preachers and leaders who promote violence," alongside harsher punishments for "hate speech promoting violence."

Additional reforms involve "making hate an aggravating factor in sentencing crimes for online threats and harassment," as well as creating a framework to designate organizations "whose leaders engage in hate speech promoting violence or racial hatred," and addressing cases of "serious vilification based on race and or advocating racial supremacy."

Under the new proposals, the home affairs minister will be granted expanded authority to deny or revoke visas, while a dedicated task force operating for 12 months will exercise increased supervision over the national education system.
