Australian PM to reassess intelligence following Bondi Beach shooting

(MENAFN) Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has ordered a comprehensive evaluation of the country’s federal intelligence and law enforcement bodies following the mass shooting that struck Sydney’s Bondi Beach on December 14, according to reports.

In an official statement, Albanese confirmed that the assessment will conclude in April and its findings will be made public, as stated by reports.

The announcement comes after a gun attack last Sunday evening in which a man and his son opened fire on the crowded beach, leaving 15 people dead and 42 others wounded. Authorities classified the incident as a "terrorist attack."

Reflecting on the incident, Albanese described the recent events as an “atrocity” and said it “reinforces the rapidly changing security environment in our nation. Our security agencies must be in the best position to respond," he said.

The review will be overseen by Dennis Richardson, a former head of Australia’s domestic intelligence service and a past senior official in the defense and foreign affairs portfolios. He will conduct the process through the prime minister’s department.

The scope of the review will center on federal institutions, including the national intelligence service and the federal police. It will assess the "powers, structures, processes, and sharing arrangements in place to keep Australians safe."

Sunday has been designated a “National Day of Reflection” in honor of those killed in the attack. Albanese is set to attend a memorial service at the site later in the evening alongside New South Wales Premier Chris Minns.

“Terrorists have sought to divide this country but this is a time to stand united – particularly on this National Day of Reflection,” Albanese said through US social media company X.
