Meta Announces Deactivation of 544,052 Youth Accounts in Australia
Australia became the first country to prohibit children under 16 from using social media on Dec. 10, blocking access to platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat.
In a blog post Sunday, Meta detailed that between Dec. 4 and Dec. 11 it removed 330,639 Instagram accounts, 173,497 Facebook accounts, and 39,916 Threads accounts.
“We call on the Australian government to engage with industry constructively to find a better way forward, such as incentivising all of industry to raise the standard in providing safe, privacy-preserving, age-appropriate online experiences, instead of blanket bans,” the company said.
The tech giant stressed its compliance with the law but cautioned that its “concerns about determining age online without an industry standard remain.”
