Australia Condemns Abuse of Gaza Flotilla Activists by Israel

(MENAFN) Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has described allegations of sexual abuse made by Australian activists detained aboard a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla as “horrific,” according to reports.

Wong said she maintains a “principled position” of believing women when they raise allegations of sexual assault, adding that the reported treatment was unacceptable.

"My principled position is to always believe women when allegations of sexual assault are made," Wong said, reported the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

"Those allegations are terrible, they are horrific, the treatment is unacceptable," she added.

The allegations relate to an incident in May when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters. Live footage reportedly showed Israeli naval units boarding and stopping the vessels.

Eleven Australians were among those detained during the operation.

Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi referred to accounts given by activist Juliet Lamont, who described being subjected to abuse during detention.

"She says 'they wrenched my trousers and underwear down and I was raped by one of the soldiers' ... other people had guns inserted inside them," she said.
